"The
Commies"

The following is a quick rant about "The
Commies" on Comedy Central. The
Commies are CC's answer to mainstream award shows and whereas I applaud
their motivation and believe that comedy is far too often overlooked during
network award shows, The Commies is a deeply flawed show. I don't blame the
program itself but, I feel it's reflective of the level of suck Comedy
Central has taken on lately.
Why, on an award show for Comedy Central are
there more acting and movie
nominations than standup awards? Why is standup so overlooked on the
network? Considering the fact that about 75% of the nominees have very
strong roots in standup and the fact that Jerry Seinfeld left a
multi-million dollar sitcom to work the club circuit, I consider this a HUGE
oversight.
The lack of quality standup on Comedy Central
is a travesty. I'd really like
to see lesser known faces on the channel. I understand that putting bigger
names must equal bigger ratings. However, as much as I love Jim Breuer and
Dave Chapelle if I see "Half Baked" one more time I'm gonna just
hand my TV
over to the lurking black man when he comes to steal it. I think it would
really behoove Comedy Central to give the Robert Kelly's and Jim Norton's of
the world a standup special so that when they eventually explode into
mainstream I can say to my friends "yeah I saw him FIRST on Comedy
Central
and he was tremendous." These guys are edgy, they're clever and they can
work clean to please the censors. It's sad when the biggest things taking
risks on your channel are puppets and animated children with no necks.
Maybe the answer is not to change Comedy
Central per se. Look at MTV for
example, people complained that MTV was not playing enough music videos. So
they created MTV 2, a channel that plays music videos all day all night. Now
all I have to complain about is the obscene amount of Ludacris and the over
abundance of Madonna/Britney pseudo-bisexuality. Perhaps Comedy Central can
make a Comedy Central 2 and just have stand up routines all day all night.
Classic standup, legendary standup, up and coming standup, it's all good to
me. Who wouldn't want to be able to watch some good down home standup at
times and just laugh your ass off? Not to mention the fact that Wandy Sykes
and Nick Swardson must need a rest, I've seen their specials 24 times.
To summarize, "The Commies" = Suck
but only because Comedy Central lately =
suck. Not enough standup and not enough variety in the standup.
